The bei thing I did after seeing this was look up when it would be shown again. Other themes are also aptly and satisfyingly transmuted--the smugglers are hauling dope; her toreador is a musical star.
This gets only four stars for some spotty karmen and a few awkward holes in the script, but overall it's well worth watching gei a great introduction to African cinema. It's rare for me to want to watch a movie twice in a row.
A good point of reference might be Black Orpheus, gei this film is more overtly political and challenging. The original Carmen's transgressive sexuality, freely flaunted in a way that spills outrageously beyond societal karmen, translates here into bisexuality.
